Volunteer Story: MAKING CONNECTIONS

Meet Liz, a volunteer for the last few months with the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS) in Far North Queensland. (Volunteer Visitors Programme – ACVVS | FNQ Volunteers Inc.)

Her interest in becoming an Aged Care Volunteer Visitor was piqued when she met Coordinator Yvonne at FNQVI’s 2023 VEXPO at the Tanks. Since she retired several years ago from a career in education, she has been a Pyjama Angel visiting a child in care one hour a week to be a mentor and promote a love of learning. Empowering Foster Kids | The Pyjama Foundation

She then resolved to offer another hour per week to spend with an older person.

Liz has met with the lady she was matched with several times now. She visits her at home and mainly they chat – about their interests and a wide variety of other topics. They have played a few games, read a few jokes and tackled some crossword puzzles for variety, but seem to find an hour goes quickly enough with chit-chat.

Liz finds her rewards from this interaction include ‘a growing sense of respect and fondness for this wonderful lady. I especially enjoy the stories of her life as a child growing up in an era and environment quite different to my own. I have met a few of her family and it is heart-warming to know that she is well supported to continue to live in her own home. I am pleased to think that my small contribution can help too’
