Volunteer Story: A SENSE OF PURPOSEĀ

Meet Felicia, a young  volunteer for the last few months with the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme(ACVVS) in Far North Queensland. (Volunteer Visitors Programme ā€“ ACVVS | FNQ Volunteers Inc.)

Felicia works full time but volunteers an hour of her time each week to visit a 98 year old gentleman in a retirement home.

Felicia volunteered often in her teenage years and recently decided to start contributing again.

ā€˜I volunteer because it reminds me of being with my granddad whom I was very close with. My grandmother is in a retirement home, and I try to think there is someone back home who is visiting my grandmother as I am visiting Ron.ā€™Ā Ā

Felicia meets with Ron every week and she finds that it gives her some familiarity and comfort of being back home with her grandparents. She really looks forward to playing cards with Ron on her visits as they share a love of puzzles and games. She has taught Ron a new card game as well as a new way to shuffle cards which he really appreciated.Ā

Felicia is very happy to be part of the ACVVS and found the process of becoming a volunteer with them very simple.

ā€˜The rewards I get from helping others is a sense of community, wellbeing, happiness, and a sense of purposeā€™
