Do you sometimes think it’d be nice for your Mum or Dad to have a friend who can visit regularly? As we get older, leave the full-time workforce, stop playing sport, and the kids grow up and move away, our friendship circles seem to shrink, but we have an easy, free solution.
If you, your parents, friends or relatives will benefit by having a regular visit from a volunteer who is happy to take a walk, play games, have conversations, watch tv, or help with hobbies and projects, then the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme is just the thing.
We all know how families are spread these days, often living in other towns, cities, States or countries. And even when we are close by, schedules are hectic, and stretched to the point where there’s no time to do all we want to undertake. Â
In these cases, volunteers can provide companionship and friendship for older people who may just want to keep interacting, or they may be socially isolated, lonely, or not have the opportunity to leave their homes very often.
Funded by the Federal Government (your taxes at work) it’s a free service available to all older Australians in aged care facilities. It’s also available to all aged care package recipients still living at home, or with family.
