DISABILITY ACTION WEEK 2018 GOLF DAY – Thursday 13 September

Each Year, FNQ Volunteers co-organises the DISABILITY ACTION WEEK Golf Day at the Cairns Golf Club. This year the event was held on Thursday 13 September 2018. The event helps raise funds to assist people with disabilities participate in a golf clinic.

Organisers included Wayne from Deaf Services Cairns, Rob and Paul from myPathways, and Oni from FNQ Volunteers.

They were joined by a large group of support staff from myPathways, several volunteer staff from FNQ Volunteers, 11 ladies from the Half Moon Bay Golf Club, and several collegues from Deaf Services Cairns. Also two lovely Japanese volunteers and a volunteer from Melbourne came along for the day to help and support the fund-raising efforts. In all there were 18 people from FNQVI at this event.

The disabled participants came from Cairns Regional Council and Cootharinga, as well as from Deaf Services Cairns.

Golf Pro Graham Bolton from the Cairns Golf Club was in attendance to assist getting participants started.

A feature of the day for the abled-bodied supporters was riding in the golf carts.
The new disabled golfers cart “was a hit”. It enables disabled golfers to drive the cart and also raises them to standing position at the rear of the cart.

The format for the day included practice hitting, warming up, lunch with Wayne speaking, then out on the golf course then back at club house for the raffles and speeches. Several people won prizes in the raffles.

A thoroughly great day in lovely Cairns’ weather to raise funds for a special sporting activity.
