VETERAN volunteer Dawn May has won the FNQ Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of almost three decades at the Cairns Historical Society.

“Dr Dawn May has been a contributing volunteer well above and beyond the call of duty for the Cairns Historical Society for the best part of 30 years,” the award judges said.

“Her commitment extends to a number of other heritage bodies who have over this period gained enormously from her generosity and expertise.”

The former James Cook University history lecturer shares her incredible knowledge and was always generous and welcoming to newcomers.

Volunteer gardener Danuta Seymour won the FNQ Volunteer Award category for those involved in volunteering for less than three year.

Ms Seymour was recognised for her makeover of the Mossman Community Centre gardens including a remaking of its ‘tree of knowledge’ space.

The Queensland Volunteering Awards will be announced on Friday night.
