THE CAIRNS FIJIAN COMMUNITY CONNECTS WITH CYCLONE WINSTON’S SCHOOL DAMAGE

Fiji Community members, Cairns, including FNQVI’s Service Coordinator, Oni Vuniyaro (red shirt in photos), visited Ratu Rusiate Nabuta Memorial School [Primary], Nailaga, Ba, Fiji, in June 2016, to inspect and see first hand school infrastructural damages caused by Cyclone Winston.

The group were briefed by the school’s Deputy Head Teacher and had a guided tour around the school premises. Extensive damages impacted the school’s library and staff room. Also roofing irons were ripped from the main school building but had been replaced by temporary ones. There were also damages to school desks and chairs. A number of teachers quarters were also damaged.

The Fiji community Cairns agreed on a partnership with the School and the local village to assist in funding the full restoration of the school library, staff room, and procurement of new desks and chairs. We live in the hope that this school and others damaged by the cyclone will again be given the opportunities and facilities to assist in the educational journey of their beloved children.
